Your tour takes you through 50 of the 2,800 palace rooms, which hold truly remarkable treasures, from superb tapestries and paintings to beautifully-ornate clocks to Stradivarius violins. Take time to admire the grand stairway, a symbol of imperial power, and the sumptuous Salón del Trono (Throne Room).

Continue to the Royal Tapestry Factory. Founded by King Philip V in 1721 the Real Fábrica continues to this day the techniques and traditions of tapestry making in exactly the same way as in centuries past. Much of the work today is the repair and maintenance of Spain’s unequalled heritage of tapestries, particularly from Flanders, to be seen in the palaces and public buildings. Marvel at the intricacy and skill needed to craft beautiful tapestries and rugs with influences on design ranging from all over the world, and where each unique item has its own story to tell.

Enjoy lunch at leisure near the arcaded 17th-century Plaza Mayor, with its imposing architecture and extensive history. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. You may like to indulge in Madrid’s superb art offerings as you explore the galleries that the city is famed for. Visit the magnificent Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which boasts an impressive collection of 800 paintings and is regarded as one of the most important privately-assembled art collections in the world. El Escorial

Drive to the north-west this morning to El Escorial which was built by King Philip II of Spain both as the burial place for his father Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and as a summer residence. In the Royal Panteon de los Reyes lay the sarcophagi of most of the kings of Spain, with only a few spaces remaining to be occupied before capacity is reached.

Drive 8 miles north to the Valle de Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), a memorial to the Spanish Civil War conceived by Spanish dictator Franco – the massive basilica carved out of the mountain is topped with a 500-ft high cross. Afterwards continue to Segovia known for its Roman and medieval monuments including a Roman aqueduct, on a par with the Pont du Gard in France.

DAY 3, September 05, 2019 | El Escorial
El Escorial

Travel northwest of Madrid this morning, to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Royal Monastery of El Escorial. Built by King Philip II of Spain, it was designed both as the burial place for his father Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and as a summer residence. At El Escorial's heart is the church with its magnificent high altar, picture galleries, impressive library and the astonishing small rooms from where the King ruled his extensive empire. In the Royal Pantheon lie the sarcophagi of most of the kings of Spain, with only a few spaces remaining to be occupied before capacity is reached.

Continue 8 miles north to what is arguably Spain’s most controversial monument, the Valle de Los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen). With its huge stone cross, oversized and imposing statues and basilica, the monument was ostensibly built by General Franco, the fascist dictator, to honour the dead from Spain’s painful Civil War (1936-1939). Its interior, lined with magnificent tapestries is overwhelming, and Franco’s tomb, together with that of the fascist ideologue José Antonio Primo de Rivera, can be found here.

Your final visit for today is the beautiful city of Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed, known for its famous aqueduct which has been used almost uninterruptedly for almost 2,000 years. Visit Segovia’s majestic cathedral, the last to be built in Gothic style in Spain and, time allowing, the fairy-tale Alcazar fortress, model for the Bavarian castles of King Ludwig II (also copied by Walt Disney).
