Experience reverance that you have never experienced before on this trip with Dwight D. Eisenhower’s granddaughter to the most important sites of D-Day.
Day 1: May 7, 2022│ Arrival in London
Upon arrival at Heathrow Airport, you will be met and transferred privately to your centrally located hotel. After enjoying lunch independently, you are invited to join a leisurely walking tour. Visit Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, a traditional site of public speaking, debates, protests, and demonstrations since the mid-19th century. Continue into fashionable Mayfair to Grosvenor Square where you’ll see the former US Embassy building and the Roosevelt Memorial.
This evening, enjoy traditional British cuisine at a local pub.
Day 2: May 8, 2022│London
Begin your day with a visit to the Houses of Parliament, which will include a visit to both chambers and the nearly 1000 year old Westminster Hall.
Afterwards, walk along Whitehall past Downing Street for lunch at the Red Lion, a popular haunt of politicians. Later, from Westminster Pier take a short public boat cruise on the Thames, disembarking at Tower Pier for a visit to the Tower of London—a historic castle built by William the Conqueror in 1078. Used as a royal residence and a prison (the Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess was briefly imprisoned here), it is home to the dazzling Crown Jewels. Drive back to the hotel at the end of the afternoon and spend the evening at leisure.
Day 3: May 9, 2022 │ London – Portsmouth – Normandy
After breakfast, depart from London and head southwest to Portsmouth, which has long been an important naval base. A visit will be made to the D-Day Story which houses the magnificent Overload Embroidery, commissioned to remember those who participated in the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy. Later, board your ferry and depart across the Channel to Caen (Ouistreham). Dine at leisure aboard the ferry before disembarking at around 9.30pm and transferring privately to your hotel.
Day 4: May 10, 2022 │ D-Day Beaches
Today will be dedicated to visiting some of the principal sites associated with the D-Day landings. The day begins with a visit to the German cemetery at La Cambe before proceeding to Utah Beach, the western-most of the D-Day beaches and vital to the seizure of the Cotentin Peninsula with its major port, Cherbourg. Proceed to La Fière Bridge, the scene of fierce fighting between June 6th and 9th. Later arrive in Sainte-Mère Église where, early in the morning of June 6th, 1944, the parachute assault by the 82nd Airborne Division heralded the beginning of operations. After lunch, head to Pointe du Hoc, famously stormed that fateful morning by the men of Lt. Col. James Rudder’s 2nd Ranger Battalion.
Conclude the afternoon with a visit to Omaha Beach and the nearby American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, where 9,385 marble tombstones commemorate the fallen. A wreath laying ceremony will take place here.
This evening, head to Arromanches where you can see the remains of one of the Mulberry Harbours just a few hundred yards from shore, miraculous feats of engineering which played such a vital role in the Normandy campaign.
Day 5: May 11, 2022 │ Mont St. Michael
Drive south this morning to Avranches, where you will learn about Operation Cobra and visit the General Patton Memorial. About 5 miles south you will come to the Pontaubault Bridge, crossed by Patton’s VIII Corps on August 1st, 1944. Later in the morning, you will arrive at Mont-Saint-Michel where the abbey, a monastic site for over 1000 years, is perched on a 264-ft rock a few hundred yards off the coast. It was a major center for pilgrimage during the Middle Ages and is unsurprisingly a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch, enjoy a guided visit to the abbey church.
Arrive back in Bayeux at the end of the afternoon to visit the Bayeux Tapestry, an impressive 225-ft embroidered scroll which tells the epic tale of William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066. Afterwards, enjoy dinner in a nearby restaurant.
Day 6: May 12, 2022 │ Normandy – Giverny – Paris
After breakfast, travel east and visit Monet’s Gardens at Giverny.
Afterwards, enjoy lunch at Les Bords de Seine in La Roche-Guyon (nearby Château La Roche-Guyon became the headquarters in 1944 of Field-Marshal Rommel). Later, continue to Paris where your hotel is located close to the Louvre.
Enjoy dinner tonight at a bistro, just a short walk from your hotel.
Day 7: May 13, 2022 │Paris
Depart in the company of your expert guide on a tour covering many of the classic sights of Paris. Start at the Arc de Triomphe before visiting Saint-Chapelle with its lovely stained-glass windows. Afterwards, see the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, which suffered a catastrophic fire in April 2019. You will then see the Shoah Memorial before lunch in a riverside restaurant with impressive views of the Eiffel Tower. Later, visit the elegant Hotel Biron, home to the Musée Rodin which reopened in 2015 after having undergone an extensive €16 million renovation. After visiting the two floors, continue your visit outside in the lovely sculpture garden, which covers 7 acres and include masterpieces such as The Burghers of Calais and The Gates of Hell. The afternoon concludes with a visit to the nearby Dome church which contains Napoleon’s Tomb.
Day 8: May 14, 2022 │ Paris
After breakfast, drive south-west from Paris to visit the magnificent Chateau of Versailles, the vast palace that was constructed in the seventeenth century for Louis XIV, the ‘Sun King.’ Housing up to 4,000 people, the palace was the glory of his reign and the epicenter of political power in France at the time. It became the model for grand houses all over Europe. During your tour, explore the complex of rooms and apartments that make up this extraordinary palace. Marvel at the opulent Grand Apartments – a collection of seven prestigious and lavishly-decorated rooms, all named after Roman Gods, which served as a parade apartment for the King’s official acts. The tour ends in the extraordinary Hall of Mirrors.
This evening enjoy dinner at a restaurant within walking distance of your hotel.
