The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is not an ordinary “self-help” or “how-to” book. It is a captivating yet simple read. The basic rule is to only keep items that "spark joy" and discard the rest.
Discussion Questions for The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up - "Spark Joy"
Since reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up I have been applying the KonMari method for tidying up in my own home. It really is a life-changing method and I am consistently surprised when I find myself thinking in terms of the KonMari method – "spark joy". I have always been a very organized person and therefore easily related to Marie Kondo in terms of organization and tidiness. However, I never imagined that even though things were organized, they were not necessarily tidy and that it was affecting my life in a negative way.
Now, I feel more at peace. My house is happier than ever, and I can tell that the happiness from being tidy has caused a ripple effect in my daily life. I realized the philosophy of only keeping things that "spark joy" can be applied to anything. For example, aside from tangible things that "spark joy," why not surround yourself with people or activities that "spark joy" as well? The entire KonMari process will take time, and I am not completely finished with it, but I feel the positive change already.
I will admit, it sounds easier than it actually is to discard items that do not "spark joy." Human nature and emotion will try to overpower you, but take a deep breath and listen to yourself. I went through my piles a few times and found that over time it was easier for me to discard various items. Letting go of things that have followed me from apartment to apartment since college that no longer "spark joy" has been a huge relief and until I went through the process and knew what it felt like to be in this moment I did not realize what a burden all of those things were.
Follow her simple order of items and before you know it, you will be living a tidy, happy life.
